WHERE to Begin

SERVE > Where to Begin
Being ordained is not about serving God perfectly but about serving God visibly, allowing people to learn whatever they can from watching you rise and fall.
— Barbara Brown Taylor, "Leaving Church: A Memior"

If you’re interested in a career in ministry, we would be delighted for you to consider becoming an ordained pastor or deacon in our denomination, the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.

The official process for this is called Candidacy. This process includes engaging in spiritual discernment, going to seminary, developing your skills and leadership through a variety of supervised ministry experiences, and a series of panel interviews to review your progress along the way.

If you’re interested in entering into the Candidacy Process, your first step is to reach out to Pastor Dara Clifford. She would love to talk with you about your journey, answer any questions that you may have, and connect you with any resources you may need.
